Sport in Caulfield Park
History of Sport in Caulfield Park
Sporting clubs quickly realized the potential of the park.
By 1905, the area was widely used by sports clubs such as Caulfield Cricket Club, Caulfield Football Club, the Malvern Lacrosse Club and soon the Caulfield Lacrosse Club (established in 1909). Also, the East Caulfield Football Club and seven other clubs were competing for the three pitches in the park. A fourth was laid down shortly afterwards.
Tennis courts were built in 1912-13. A bowling green was proposed and then deferred. It was intended to fence off facilities and then charge for them.
In 1906 the Council acquired a horse drawn mowing machine for the park.
The Croquet Club was founded in the 1920s.
