Plane Tree Avenue

It is thought that the avenue of Plane Trees leading from Balaclava Road just west of the old road into the park and across diagonally to the Cricket Pavilion was established around the early 1920s.  There are over twenty mature specimens of Planes (Platanus x acerifolius) in the avenue.  Those nearer to Balaclava Road appear to be even older and perhaps were the inspiration for the avenues development.  As the photograph shows, the trees contribute to the dense leafy character of this south-western part of the park.  They provide a pleasant shady canopy for those walking through this section of the park.
